More than just a map.

TOTOride is my first-ever UX case study and represents my level of skill just starting my UX journey. To see more recent work, please look at my case studies for Giide and Fashion Dolls. TOTOride is a transit app concept that I designed with bus-commuting users’ needs in mind. TOTOride’s goal is to provide intuitive and interesting UI, while maintaining ease-of-use and functional design. TOTOride aims to help commuters by comprehensively displaying listed bus lines and show current and future arrival times for specific buses.

My Role:
PLATFORMS: MOBILE WEB, IOS

In 2023, I led the creation of the app concept TOTOride. My responsibilities included, user research, concept development, product strategy, information architecture, designing user flows, interaction design, visual design, user testing, and prototyping.

“When I commute by bus, I want to be able to find my bus easily,
and know exactly when it arrives so I don’t miss it.”

A problem beckons a solution.

The city of Laurel wants to provide fast, easy, and affordable transportation for its denizens. But if it’s commuters can’t find the right bus, they can’t make use of their city’s transportation. The major focus of Laurel’s concerns is the Washington & State bus stop, which houses seven bus lines at the same stop. Commuters complain that they can’t find the right bus and don’t know when their specific bus is arriving. This failure in accessibility was the core focus of my app design,
in relation to the city of Laurel’s business requirements and MVP scope.

Project Goals/ Business Requirements:

1. Ensure that any commuter can tell when their specified us is arriving at the Washington & State bus stop.
2.Ensure that any commuter can tell how much time they have to get to their specified bus before it arrives at the Washington & State bus stop.
3. Allow commuters to check the arrival and departure times from each of the seven bus lines at the Washington & State bus stop.

Key Considerations:

Product should be accessible for wide age-range.
Product should maintain MVP business requirements, and still remain interesting to end-users.

Product Users

Our target audience is the general population age group 18-60

Our users are everyday people who ride the bus and feel that their commuting experience is sub-par. We hope to create a product that increases their routing application satisfaction.

The Process

To evaluate the usability of TOTOride, I relied on user survey testing and 7 usability tests. This allowed me to more fully understand the needs of my users by combining both qualitative and quantitative information. Although users were able to understand the basic concept of the app, they continued to struggle with some UI-related components of my design. Discussions with users through usability testing revealed that I needed to simplify the design and bring my focus back toward the MVP, which streamlined efforts to reveal a more polished app. One which serves the business and user requirements.

Usability Testing Results

By conducting usability testing, I learned that some features were redundant and were then voided from the project. Users were confused by some icons in the navigation bar, so I changed the icons to be easily understood. I also checked the color-contrast of the app to ensure WCAG usability requirements.
